April 6, 2017

SAN JUAN, PR – Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares, and Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, along with officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today, that FEMA will be hiring close to 300 reservists to help citizens and first responders during disasters or emergencies. These reservists deploy anywhere within the United States and its territories, and are employed and paid on a temporary, on-call and intermittent basis.

"When disaster strikes, citizens looks to FEMA. Now, FEMA is seeking talented men and women who are eager to assist disaster survivors in the role of Applicant Services Specialist, as FEMA Reservist, in the Individual Assistance unit. Vital employees to FEMA's disaster workforce, reservists support disaster survivors when they are most in need," explained Alejandro De La Campa, Director of the FEMA Caribbean Area Division.

"We are sure that the talent and commitment of the Puerto Rican Reserve will complement effectively the labor of FEMA. I urge our citizens to evaluate the possibility of collaborating with the federal agency in roles that will help support others after emergencies and disasters," declared Rosselló Nevares.

"A close collaboration with federal agencies and the Caribbean Area Director have made this announcement possible. As Resident Commissioner, I have sought the help and collaboration of the federal authorities for creativeness to improve our economy, and today, this program will allow us to recruit our human resources to manage any situation, adding great value to the work of the agency. Experience with Katrina and Sandy in emergency management now allows FEMA to improve their assistance and rapid response. Puerto Ricans are fortunate that this federal agency is always the immediate aid resource in times of disaster in Puerto Rico, currently investing $126 million approved in ongoing projects for mitigation and emergency preparedness," said the Resident Commissioner.

An Applicant Services Specialist, provides support to the Individual Assistance Cadre by communicating with disaster survivors on disaster assistance programs, the process required to receive assistance, and the current status of their case.
