Jenniffer González announces $943,349 for the Sea Grant program of the University of Puerto Rico

February 22, 2019- Congresswoman Jenniffer González Colón, announced a new allocation of federal funds for the Sea Grant program of the University of Puerto Rico dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of coastal and marine resources in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean region.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA) allocated $943,349 to the Sea Grant program, located in the Mayagüez Campus.

In the funds approval letter, NOAA emphasizes that since its inception, the Sea Grant program has been instrumental in solving problems and creating benefits and opportunities for coastal communities and marine resource users in the Caribbean region.

Its plan for 2018- 2021 features the main goals and objectives set by its strategic plan for the four years including adjustments to deal with the effect of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which devastated the archipelago of Puerto Rico in September 2017; considerable efforts will be developed and implemented to increase the resiliency of coastal communities, emergency managers, first responders and resource users.
