Jenniffer González-Colón refutes talk of Fort Buchanan closure

Washington DC- After the rise of comments and chatter about a posible colure of Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González-Colón reported she has taken steps to ensure the continuing permanence of the military base.
"On the very day I was sworn in as Resident Commissioner I met the U.S. Army Legislative Liaison. The information I received leads me to be confident that Fort Buchanan will remain operational in Puerto Rico, ensuring the jobs of over three hundred Department of Defense and other civilian employees, as well as guaranteeing the permanence of posts for Army Active Component, Reserve and National Guard personnel", González-Colón announced.
Due to the Department of Defense civilian workforce of over three hundres, as well as active military garrison, a Fort Buchanan closure would not be contemplated under the ‘Defense Authorization Amendments and Base Closure and Realignment Act' (10 U.S.C. §2687).
"Today we are certain that there will be no adverse effect on services to our military members and families will not be affected, or on the economic activity generated by the base and its adjunct businesses. Neither will there be adverse impacto n the direct and indirect Jobs generated by Fort Buchanan's operations", concluded the Resident Commissioner.
