Washington, DC - On the 110th anniversary of the birth of former resident commissioner and Puerto Rican educator, Jaime Benítez, the resident commissioner, Jenniffer González Colón, joined the non-profit organization ASPIRA as part of the Committee of Honor to recognize the legacy of the humanist in Congress.

In the activity celebrating the Contributions of Jaime Benítez, through a proclamation delivered for Congressional Record, González Colón highlighted the important role of Jaime Benítez in making possible the educational development, as rector and first president of the University of Puerto Rico, intellectual development and leadership of thousands of Puerto Rican and Latino students nationally and internationally.

He was a founding member of the Association of Caribbean Universities (UNICA), the "International Association of University Presidents", and the "National Association of Latino Elected Officials" (NALEO).

In turn, Don Jaime Benítez made a significant contribution to the development of Puerto Rico and its Constitution, presiding over the Commission that drafted the Puerto Rico Bill of Rights.

Benitez represented the people of Puerto Rico Congress, from 1973 to 1976. It also made it possible for the University of Puerto Rico to become a top-level university, serve communities throughout the island of Puerto Rico and bring talent from around the world to teach and learn in Puerto Rico.

"The legacy of Jaime Benítez deserves national recognition for his contributions to American society, such as paving the training of professionals who actively participate in the social, cultural and economic development of the communities of the United States and Puerto Rico," said González Colón.
