August 18, 2018

San Juan, Puerto Rico- The resident commissioner, Jenniffer González Colón, celebrated the 40-year career of maestro Arnaldo Roche Rabell with recognition from the United States Congress.

"Roche, represents us all. In artists like Roche we see how our creative force adapts and evolves without losing its essence. Express our being and our vision is not restricted to a single form or a single style, or a single reference topic, but there is a very wide range. In my role as congresswoman every year I must sponsor a competition of young artists so that their work is displayed in one of the corridors of the Federal Capitol, and it is great satisfaction to see the many ways in which that young talent manifests itself. I do not doubt that the example of teachers like Roche is a fundamental part in encouraging these new visions, "said the resident commissioner.

The recognition took place in the Hall of Resident Commissioners of the district office of González Colón, where connoisseurs and art lovers met. In the activity a work of the Territorio del Alma series was exhibited.

In 2011, when González Colón served as president of the House of Representatives, she sponsored a sample of 22 Puerto Rican artists after the 70s in the Tous Soto Gallery of the Chamber. This was an exercise in representing how Puerto Rican art has moved during this period, as society develops and faces challenges. In this exhibition there were exhibitions of artists such as Carmelo Fontánez and Carlos Rivera Villafañe, the now defunct urban artist "Pun 18" and the honoree of today, Arnaldo Roche, who presented his work "Astronomy"; image of the Capitol, in blue, with stars.

"For his distinguished career as an exponent of Puerto Rican Art and an example of the evolution of the Puerto Rican artistic class and for continuing to represent the vibrant and resilient cultural identity in the artistic world beyond its coasts, with a vision that continues to grow, evolve and redefine itself without forgetting its roots. We celebrate the achievements and we await the creations that are to come "reads the proclamation of the Congress delivered to the artist by the congresswoman.

Arnaldo Roche, a renowned exponent of art, has participated in numerous international art events. His oil painting "Living with courage" was the gift to the current kings of Spain of his visit to Puerto Rico.

His work is of strong psychological content and draws on historical and personal references, in which he explores topics related to man and his nature. He has worked mainly in the genres of portraiture, self-portraiture and landscape in large format through a pictorial expressionism, exuberant in color and drama.

In his work, he uses as a base human models or objects that he covers with the fabric of the canvas to highlight the contours through color and the multiple textures achieved with the techniques of frottage, impasto, printing and writing. This has allowed him to gain an important place in the criticism of current art nationally and internationally thanks to his dedication, commitment to the arts and his unique aesthetic vocabulary.
